Launch of a balloon in memory of a teenager killed in a gas station

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Dozens of balloons were released outside Hamilton High School Monday night to remember a sophomore who was shot at a gas station in Whitehaven over the weekend. end.

Phillexus Buchanan, 15, was one of three teenage girls and a 9-month-old baby who was shot dead Friday night at the gas station on Elvis Presley Boulevard.

Police said they were sitting in a car at a pump when someone in a dark colored Nissan drove up and opened fire.

Shelby County school administrators and family said Buchanan and Breunna Woods, 16, were both killed. Woods was a cheerleader at Wooddale High School.

“It was really heartbreaking. Everyone was crying,” said a Wooddale student.

Buchanan’s aunt Tonya Dockins counted down the balloon release for her niece. Buchanan’s older sister and 6-year-old brother were also present.

Dockins said she tries to be strong for her family, but it’s hard. She said the killings had to stop.

“Look how it affects everyone here,” Dockins said. “It’s his six-year-old brother who no longer goes to see his sister, it’s his big sister, big brother. All of you, please lay down those weapons.

Police recovered the Nissan but are still looking for the shooter(s). The other teenager and baby who were shot should recover.
